Rethinking the Scarlet Witch as the likely next Sorcerer Supreme ... once again
Doctor Antic is going to die…
We have no doubts about that.
Such are the lives (and a great deal the many deaths) and careers of Marvel and DC superheroes and villains, where being dead is often a terminable inconvenience.
Only the accurate nature and ultimate continuance of his death remains to be seen.
Simply The Death of Doctor Strange, the 5-issue series that debuts in September, has an exciting dynamic worth some extra consideration: the limited series will liable conclude in January, just a a few weeks ahead Saint Benedict Cumberbatch's Stephen Strange returns to the MCU in Edge 25's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Close observers of the powerful Marvel media machine know Wonder Comics will often time the unblock of new comic books and collections to agree to big movie and Tv set releases. But in case - 'killing' the character even as 'mainstream' interest in him will about sure as shooting rise - is a bit off the beaten marketing path and Marvel virtually certainly has a scheme in mind.
The only question is what is that strategy.
Slip in point: After over a civil year in publishing limbo due to global epidemic delays, the Darkhold limited series has returned to Marvel's schedule. Originally regular to debut earlier Disney Summation's WandaVision in 2020, Darkhold will now also debut in September with the bookend one-shot Darkhold Alpha #1, followed aside five type one and only-shots and concluding with the bookend Darkhold Omega #1, likely in January 2022 … in the nick of time for ... wait for it ... Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Now, the Darkhold storyline doesn't star or characteristic Doctor Strange as far atomic number 3 Marvel has indicated (he'll be concurrently busy in the parvenue Defenders circumscribed serial along with the series that will on the face of it kill him), but IT does genius perhaps the cardinal of the three most likely characters to wear the Marvel Universe's Mickey Mantle of Wizard Supreme if and when it goes up for grabs. The freshman of the three is Loki, who fairly recently held the mantlepiece in the comic books.
The second and who does appear in Darkhold is Doctor Day of reckoning, who has briefly held the title before and is always looking for additive power and prestige wherever he can determine information technology. And finally, the third is Scarlet Witch, which given what we jazz of WandaVision and her role in The Multiverse of Rabidness, cannot belong ignored.
The timing of it all is near for certain not a concurrence.
Or at to the lowest degree thus we thought when we world-class published this story. But then she died. And we had to second thought our premise.
But like a sho we might have to rethink our second thought...
Confused?
Give us a moment.
The Darkhold event, which prominently features Wanda recruiting heroes to test to wriggle the titular book of dark magic handwritten by the other-dimensional ogre Chthon from Doom, has parallels with the close of WandaVision, in which the newly 'royal' embodiment of chaos magic the Scarlet Witch is seen reading from the MCU version of the book in the streaming show's final scene.
The newly powered-up and now Darkhold-versed Wanda is, of course, the conscientious objector-maven of Doctor Imported in the Multiverse of Madness, which makes information technology ... or made it ... all the more likely Wonder Comics may try to capitalize on the moment by having the Scarlet Witch win the title of Sorcerer Maximal in the wake of the Darkhold event and after the Doctor Strange's death.
But there's been a twist.
In fact, two twists ...
Spoilers ahead for September 15's The Trial of Magnetoelectric machine #2
The Scarlet Jinx was murdered and her trunk discovered in June's X-Factor #10. And if you didn't actually read the story, Marvel probably found a way to let you know she had been killed.
She was seemingly murdered by her father-non-father Magneto, the prime suspect in The Trial of Magneto limited series, but readers can probably expect a twist there atomic number 3 healed.
Newsarama previously entrenched that the Darkhold series takes place earlier the events of the Hellfire Gala affair, so that was never a conflict, just before her death we speculated that information technology looked more and more probable that Wanda would make headway the title of Sorceror Supreme and would be the in style and perhaps nigh authoritative stepping stone in her journey in comical books from a nestlin variation persona with often inexplicable, undefined powers, to a shop victim/pawn of villains like Chthon, Mephisto, and Doctor Doom, to a fully somebody-realized persona in hold in of her own destiny and same of the most powerful and important superheroes in the entire Wonder Universe.
The last 20 minutes or so of the WandaVision series finale featured a Scarlet Witch who, finished her travel of loss, suffering, and fruition has emerged as a confident, assured hero who seems prepared to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Restore Tramontane, and perhaps accept whatever the multiverse has to throw at her to rescue her children Billy and Tommy (World Health Organization, by the way, are reanimated and well in the amusing books).
Like her laughable book counterpart, the live-action Wanda also seemed self-possessed to emerge as one of her world's virtually powerful figures. But then comedian hold Wanda was killed, and taking terminated the pall of Sorcerer Supreme seemed outside apt its impracticality.
Only now's she's back... or at least a Scarlet Hex is back anyway
Because in true mirthful book fashion, she's been resurrected, seemingly referable the mutant resurrection protocols, albeit with some question marks.
Check knocked out our story on The Tribulation of Magneto #2 for the full details (near of which are still to be revealed), but once again it's been demonstrated anything can come about in mirthful books and often does.
In a previous version of this tarradiddle while she was dead we suggested there was still plenty of wiggle room for Wanda to still come through Doctor Alien early in 2022, and Marvel has apparently wiggled.
And now we might even have some possible connections between the murders of Wanda and Doctor Strange.
Serve it to suppose there are still a long ton of questions to be answered about the put forward of the occurrent Scarlet Witch you bet that might affect her preparedness to become the next Thaumaturge Supreme. But the biggest obstacle has been overtake.
She's cognisant again, which likely moves her back adequate the top of the list.
Speaking of that list, check KO'd Newsarama's deep dive into who will cost the next Marvel Sorcerer Ultimate?
